Frequently Asked Questions
These questions cover a range of concerns from booking and safety to what to expect on hikes.
What types of hikes do you offer?
We offer three main types of hikes:
Easy Walks – Short and easy-paced hikes suitable for beginners and families. Most of these are within Table Mountain National Park.
Adventure Hikes – Moderate to challenging hikes that may involve varied terrain, including climbs and more rugged paths on Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and other popular peaks.
Multi-Day Hikes – Extended hikes over several days, typically in remote areas, requiring overnight camping or hut stays. There are plenty to choose from including Cederberg and the Otter Trail.
Do I need any prior hiking experience?
No prior experience is necessary for our Easy Walks and some Adventure Hikes. However, our Adventure Hikes and Multi-Day Hikes may require a basic level of fitness and stamina. Our guides will assess your fitness level and tailor the hike accordingly.
What should I bring on a hike?
For an enjoyable experience, we recommend:
– Comfortable, sturdy hiking boots or shoes
– Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are best)
– Water and snacks
– Sunscreen and sunglasses
– A hat for sun protection
– A small backpack
– Personal medications (if necessary)
Is there a maximum group size for hikes?
Yes, for safety and quality of experience, we limit group sizes. Our Easy Walks and Adventure Hikes typically have a maximum of 10 people per group. For multi-day hikes, the group size is usually between 4-8 people.
What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule my booking?
We understand that plans can change. Cancellations and rescheduling are possible. In general, we recommend giving at least 48 hours’ notice for a refund or to reschedule.
How fit do I need to be to go on a multi-day hike?
Our multi-day hikes vary in difficulty. We’ll work with you to select a hike that suits your fitness level. A general guideline is that you should be able to walk for several hours a day and carry a light backpack. If you’re unsure, please contact us for advice on the best fit.
How do I know if my hike is suitable for my fitness level?
Our website provides a detailed description of each hike’s difficulty level, including distance, duration, and terrain. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for guidance. We’re happy to help match you with a hike that fits your needs.
What happens if I get injured or feel unwell during a hike?
Our guides are trained in first aid and will provide assistance if you feel unwell or injured. We always carry a first-aid kit, and depending on the severity of the situation, we will take the necessary steps to ensure your safety. If needed, we will arrange for transportation to the nearest medical facility.
Can I join a hike if I’m traveling alone?
Absolutely! Many of our guests hike solo and enjoy meeting fellow adventurers. You’ll be part of a group with a friendly and supportive atmosphere, and our guides ensure that everyone feels included.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my hike?
Safety is our top priority. In the event of extreme weather conditions, we may need to postpone or reschedule your hike. If your hike is canceled due to weather, we will do our best to offer alternative dates or a refund.
Can I book a private hike?
Yes, we offer private guided hikes for individuals, families, or groups. This allows for a more personalized experience and flexible itinerary. Contact us directly to discuss your needs and availability.
Are children allowed on your hikes?
We welcome families and children on our Easy Walks and certain Adventure Hikes. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult and be able to keep up with the pace of the hike. For multi-day hikes, we recommend children be at least 10 years old.
